"Our Mission is to create software applications for the internet that enable people to work together in a collaborative manner." The FAST System (Field Automation for Sanitation Trucks) is an exciting new application for managing sewer maintenance work orders and the associated facilities data and deploying that data to the field. When engineers and operators at Georgia Power Corporation (GPC) need maps or reports about their electrical distribution network, they turn to the Distribution Viewer As is the case with most energy companies today, FirstEnergy Corp of Akron, Ohio, looks at operational efficiency as the key to financial performance improvements and shareholder profit. NaviGate Tour Advanced FeaturesSome of the more advanced features of the NaviGate application framework are covered in this section of the tour. There is a variety of advanced NaviGate component application modules currently available or currently under development by Gatekeeper Systems. These features are configured as modules, permitting us to combine the right combination of components for each customer's application. The applets available include those in the following list: Alarm and Notification ModuleThe NaviGate Alarm and Notification Module will send alarms in the form of email and pager messages to individuals. These messages are triggered by activity in the NaviGate Operations Visualization System, NaviGate Underground Service Alert Module, NaviGate Lightning Module, and NaviGate Weather Module. Users can configure their own message preferences using web-based forms. The NaviGate Buffering Module is a Java control panel that performs a number of GIS object buffering operations. Automatic Vehicle Location ModuleThe NaviGate AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location) Module provides for the display and management of wireless-connected GPS units in vehicles such as utility maintenance trucks, customer service vehicles, and emergency vehicles. NaviGate AVL displays the current and historical location of vehicles in the NaviGate software environment, and allows users to communicate with the vehicle wirelessly when two-way communication is supported by the AVL field unit. Bookmark ModuleThe Bookmark Module allows users to save and share the location and appearance of a map in the NaviGate application. The saved characteristics include the location and extent of the map, the layers visible, and the selected objects. After saving a bookmark, the user can then return to that map simply by selecting the bookmark from the bookmark applet. Bookmarks can also be marked as "public" so that other users can visit them by name, and bookmarks have corresponding URLs so that users can e-mail a full map "view" to another user. Buffering ModuleThe NaviGate Buffering Module is a Java control panel that performs a number of GIS object buffering operations. The Buffering Applet enables users to select any object in the map and perform a standard parcel radius map operation on that object. For example, the user can select a pipeline and ask for all parcels within three hundred feet of that pipeline. The applet will then automatically produce a mailing list of the owners of those parcels and download this mailing list to the user's PC for use in a MailMerge operation. Basic buffering functions are already included in the standard features of the NaviGate applications. Dispatch ModuleThe NaviGate Dispatch Module provides a flexible but simple interface for viewing and managing the workload of field personnel. The Module focuses on two lists: the list of field personnel currently available and the list of work orders for a single day. Both lists are managed together, and also viewed in a map user interface. Document Manager ModuleConstruction and maintenance personnel need field access to current electronic drawings. Most utilities still satisfy this need by printing out "map books" and taking paper maps into the field. The NaviGate Document Manager Module is a NaviGate extension that maintains a complete and current set of engineering drawings and related documents on mobile laptop or tablet computers, utilizing the web-based NaviGate platform to distribute the files. Field OptionThe standard NaviGate system is designed around office use, and presumes a modestly fast Internet connection and large display screen. The NaviGate Field Option provides a new customized user interface optimized for use on generally slower wireless-connected mobile computing devices where the user interface is smaller and likely to be pen-based rather than mouse-based. The Field Option also provides extensive support for taking data into the field via wireless connections or utilizing a synchronize-and-go disconnected mode of operation. Lightning ModuleThe NaviGate Lightning Module retrieves and manages data about current lightning activity and displays that information via the NaviGate map interface, together with your facilities data, customer locations, and other spatial data sources. Operation Visualization ModuleThe NaviGate Operations Visualization System (OVS) shows utility operations information via a web-based and map-based user interface. Utilities can use OVS to display maps and reports on real-time operating activity such as trouble calls, maintenance work, construction activity, and so on. Point Feature Management ModuleThe NaviGate Point Feature Management Module allows users to create, edit, and manage point data from within NaviGate. Printing ModuleThe standard MapGuide viewer provides the basic function for printing to any Windows-connected printer. However, the standard MapGuide viewer printing cannot easily produce maps at a variety of standard scales (say, 600-scale) or produce maps that fully utilize the available printing area of the printer. The NaviGate Printing Module allows users to easily print a standard format and standard scale map from the map viewer in a NaviGate application. Users employ the standard features of NaviGate to configure the map the way they want it to appear, and then invoke the NaviGate Printing Applet. The Applet then adjusts the map to take advantage of the full printing area, sets the print scale, and adjusts a variety of printing parameters to the user's preferences. The Applet can adjust visibility of layers, the size of fonts, and other parameters as necessary to create an attractive and useful map. Map settings (scales, titles, and so on) can be saved, re-used and shared between users. Redlining ModuleThe NaviGate Redlining module allows users to draw "red lines" or graphical editing and notations on a map. The redlines are saved to the NaviGate application database and can be shared or kept private from other users. The most common use of redlines is to communicate map corrections and additions to map maintenance personnel. The NaviGate Red Lining Applet includes a user interface for use by map maintenance personnel to select, view, and mark as "completed" redline input from the users. The Applet allows users to perform basic editing functions such as:
Right of Way ModuleThe NaviGate Right of Way Module provides an easy-to-use interface for planning rights of way. The application allows the user to select intersections, street centerlines, intersections, and arbitrary map locations and build a right of way alignment that follows those points. The developed right of way is then buffered and compared to the parcel landbase to develop a list of parcels involved in the acquisition of rights of way and easements. Individual line segments can be assigned different buffer widths. The resulting table of affected parcels is maintained in a relational database, where the user can then maintain other associated information, such as right of way status, dates of notification, and the like. While not intended to automate the entire process of acquiring rights of way, the Right of Way Module will substantially improve the ability to evaluate various alignments and to manage the data associated with affected parcels. Underground Service Alert ModuleThe NaviGate USA (Underground Service Alert) Module provides interfaces to Call-Before-You-Dig call centers so that USA tickets can be displayed and managed in NaviGate, both in the office and in the field via a wireless connection. Weather ModuleThe NaviGate Weather Module retrieves and manages data about current weather and displays that information via the NaviGate map interface, together with your facilities data, customer locations, and other spatial data sources.
The NaviGate Application Framework is a suite of web-based products designed to promote information integration, increase self service, eliminate paper work, and improve field service for utilities.
